Out With The Old, In With The New

2018 was a year that interior designers embraced their surroundings, looking towards nature for inspiration. Neutral earth tones, greys and whites were favoured by many, bringing an air of minimalism and light to every room.

Adding a splash of colour, many style-savvy decorators turned to two pioneering trends, ‘Caribbean floral’ and ‘new nomadic’. The former boasts patterns with deep inky tones, whilst the latter ushered in untreated woods, potted cacti and the occasional pop of burnt orange.

To help you turn your home into an on-trend showstopper for 2019, we’ve put together some of our own interior predictions for the year ahead.

Wintery beginnings

With spring on the horizon, some of us aren’t ready to let go of cosy nights gathered on the sofa. Many designers have embraced the winter cold and have renovated their living and bedroom spaces into cosy ski-lodge style retreats. To reclaim some of that winter warmth for yourself, start by taking inspiration from hidden woodland log cabins and dress your room with treated wood armchairs and thick patterned rugs, chunky coffee tables and rustic shelving.

Dress these with a range of faux-fur blankets and cushions to curl into when the temperature drops, or opt for large throws and tablecloths of soft browns, oranges and reds. Add some finishing touches with animal printed accessories, such as oversized mugs, ornaments and wall hangings, or antler shaped candleholders.

Warming industrial

Navy blue is the new grey – that’s the key message for this year as kitchens take on a darker feel with a nod to the industrial. By combining dark blue or black cabinets with brass accents, you can easily achieve this look and create a calming atmosphere in your home. This new trend works perfectly with either a modern minimal fashion or a classic shaker-style depending on your personal preference.

Oceanic relaxation

In previous years, nautical bathrooms were an interior staple, using souvenir shells and driftwood accessories to showcase that beachside aesthetic. This year, designers look to be sailing away from this theme and traveling below the waves to get their inspiration, allowing the shapes and textures of the ocean to influence their styling.

Homeowners can recreate this free flowing nature by placing a statement, scallop-backed armchair in the corner of the room and opting for curved, relaxed shelving, tables and artwork. Alternatively, you can take it one step further and opt for fish-scale styled tiling for the bathroom, using hexagons or T-drops to add a fluid essence to the room.

Bohemian throwback

Last year, Instagram and Pinterest accounts showcased the botanical transformations of many homeowners’ interiors, watching as they slowly turned every room into a thriving, exotic rainforest.

This year, the bohemian style goes one step further, and looks to revitalise fringes, pompoms and summer palettes. With tassels, ribbons and homemade macramé designs hanging from mirrors and lamps, this style can be achieved in a few simple, inexpensive adjustments.

If you have any advice or examples of how to follow this year’s upcoming trends, we’d love to hear about them. Share your thoughts and pictures with us on the Miller Homes Twitter or Instagram.
