At Miller Homes, we’re not just building houses, we're creating the foundations of sustainable communities designed to thrive for generations.
By working in harmony with the natural environment and following the science on protecting the future, we build homes that become the foundations of sustainable communities. It’s an approach that brings benefits for our customers, the community and ourselves. Our current three-year Sustainability Strategy is part of our roadmap towards meeting our target of Net Zero across our whole organisation by 2045.
Our commitment starts with site selection and runs right through to customer handover and beyond. Habitat protection is fundamental, and planning requirements now include provisions such as bat and insect bricks. We go further, installing nesting bricks for endangered bird species, providing access routes for hedgehogs and using surface water drainage ponds to create habitats for insects, amphibians and other wildlife. We actively seek opportunities to work in harmony with nature, and with communities. Integration with services and amenities is essential. For example, 86% of our current homes are within 500 metres of a public transport node.
We use only sustainably grown timber In our homes. Kitchens are fully certified to Forestry Stewardship Council standards. We recycle 70% of our construction waste and divert a remarkable 98% of it from landfill. In 2024, our programme to protect resources actually reduced waste by more than a tonne for every home we build. On site, we use electricity only from suppliers that draw on at least 90% renewable sources. We also, where we can, use local contractors and tradesmen, to support the community.
Research by the Zero Carbon Hub and the NHBC Foundation has established that new build homes can raise energy efficiency by over 50% compared with renovated older properties, substantially reducing carbon emissions and bringing savings, for the homeowner, of around £1980 979 every year. The electricity supply in place when we hand over a home to its new owner comes from at least 90% renewables. We install low energy or LED lighting to reduce electricity consumption, and dual flush toilets and aerated showers to help homeowners minimise water use.
