With the long, warm nights upon us and British summer time almost in full swing, there’s nothing better than firing up the BBQ and enjoying an alfresco dinner from the comfort of your own home.
Celebrated from 28 May to 3 June, National BBQ Week is here, so there’s no better time to light the coals and put on a spread to remember.
Here are our top tips on how to host the perfect BBQ at home.
The main event
BBQ fare is perfect for pleasing the whole family, with endless foodie options and delicious recipes to choose from. Stick to classic burgers and hotdogs for a casual family gathering, or why not step it up a notch with chargrilled sirloin steaks or seabass for more sophisticated spin on the humble BBQ.
And it’s not just the main course which has pride of place on the coals. For those with a sweet tooth, try wrapping bananas and milk chocolate in tin foil and grilling for a decent sweet treat, and keep the little ones happy with toasted marshmallows over a low heat – ideal for satisfying summer sugar cravings.
Super sides
The ultimate sharing feast, a barbecue is a great way to bring friends and family together to try a host of dishes. A ‘family style’ sharing platter is a great accompaniment to the grilled meats and veggies, with colourful summer salads, baked potatoes and fresh breads all perfect sides to the main event.
Serve in style
Rather than using fine china or expensive cutlery, keep all of your crockery intact and opt for outdoor friendly dinnerware. We love these matching leaf pint dinner plates and serving bowls from Marks and Spencer, bringing a touch of the tropics to your home BBQ.
Thirsty work
You’ll want to make sure that you and your guests are kept hydrated on a hot summer’s day, so make sure that your outdoor dining table is always lined with jugs of iced water.
For minimum time in the kitchen and more time with your guests, fill a small bucket with ice to keep beers, wine and soft drinks chilled all day long. And for an added extra, why not set up a stylish self-serving drinks station. Complete with bottles of fizz, fruity garnishes and fresh juices, allow family and friends to whip up their very own cocktail. For the ultimate refreshing tipple try prosecco with a dash of elderflower cordial and fresh mint – summertime in a glass!
Let there be light
When the sun goes down, use lighting to keep the party going late into the night. Candles and Moroccan style lanterns are a great way to add a touch of exotic ambiance, or why not try draping delicate fairy lights on the garden fence for an extra pretty look.
Keep it cosy
Rather than retreating inside as the night draws in, get nice and warm under the stars. A patio heater or wood burner is great for keeping out the chill, with soft cushions and blankets also adding a cosy touch.
We love this knitted pom pom throw from Next, perfect for making the most of the evening and snuggling up to enjoy left overs before bed.
