Teesside is an area in Northeast England centred around the River Tees. Split between North Yorkshire and County Durham, Teesside has superb transport links from the A19 which runs through the heart of the region.
With a rich industrial heritage, its own international airport, and a wonderful mix of coastline, vibrant towns and rolling countryside, Teesside is a great place to call home. But what is it like to live there?
Here’s a quick guide as to why Teesside a great place to live.
Heritage and History
From Hartlepool in the north to Markse and Saltburn-by-the-Sea in the southeast and over to Stockton-on-Tees in the west, the area of Teesside, established in 1968, is compact but packs a mighty punch.
Its two largest towns, Middlesbrough and Stockton-on-Tees are situated on the Tees River. Hartlepool on the North Sea coast has a well-established working port serving the north of England and beyond. Teesport is the 5th largest port in the UK and the only major port in England to handle more exports than imports.
Historically, the Teesside area was famous for its steel production, indeed the Sydney Harbour Bridge and Canary Wharf in London are just two iconic buildings that feature Teesside steel. And let’s not forget an explorer who shaped the world, James Cook was born in Middlesbrough in 1728.
Coastal delights
There are some amazing beaches and seaside towns along the Teesside coastline. Local favourites include Markse-by-the Sea, soon to be home to our Beaconfield Rise development, and Saltburn.
Heading towards Middlesbrough, Redcar is wide and flat with far reaching views whilst a little further north is Seaton Carew, a wonderful seaside resort featuring colourful and quirky beach huts.
Heading up the coast from Hartlepool is Crimdon Dene, perhaps the most southern beach where, if you’re lucky, you might find some sea glass. It can take up to 200 years for sea glass to wash up on shore, and it’s often used by local crafts people to create wonderful jewellery and art.
A taste of Teesside
Spread along the coast are several fantastic seaside restaurants, many of which are famed for the nation’s seaside favourite, fish and chips! Seaview at Saltburn, as the name suggests, offers dreamy North Sea views as well as pretty tasty food!
Heading inland there is much to be enjoyed, from country pubs to town-based restaurants. Check out the best restaurants guide in Teesside, a great list to work your way through and find your favourite.
If you fancy trying a local delicacy you could perhaps check out a restaurant that serves Teesside Chicken Parmo. A breaded chicken breast smothered with bechamel sauce and cheese. It’s found in many pubs and restaurants and can easily be rustled up at home too!
Finally, let’s not forget the famous Lemon Top! A tantalising Teesside favourite of creamy vanilla ice cream topped with a tangy lemon sorbet, it’s perfect for a hot sunny day in Teesside!
