The market town of Bedford, based on the River Great Ouse, is an excellent commuter hub with plenty to see and do on its own doorstep.
A local train station takes residents to London in under an hour, with future investments underway to form direct links to Oxford and Cambridge. By road, great connections to the M1 provide easy access to the rest of the country, perfect for work trips or staycations.
The vast range of shops, galleries and restaurants in the capital city are easy to get to. However, Bedford’s own bustling cultural scene has enough to keep everyone entertained. Lovers of the great outdoors can enjoy one of the numerous country walks in the area, with Priory Country Park and lots of other green spaces to explore. On Castle Lane you’ll find The Higgins, an art gallery and museum with a vibrant, ever-changing schedule.
Testament to the town’s sense of community spirit, locals look forward to the biannual Bedford River Festival, featuring live music, boat races and a continental market. Throughout the year, concerts are also held at the park, together with a selection of smaller live music venues in the town.
There is a good selection of retail parks in the area, packed out with family-favourite shops. Numerous smaller independent traders, hairdressers and cafes are in the town centre, especially in the St Cuthberts Arcade or the Greyfriars Arcade, while bigger shopping centres are just a short drive away.
Standards of education are great in Bedford, with numerous schools in the area rated ‘outstanding’ by Ofsted, including Priory Primary, Polam School, Castle Newnham School and St John’s School. The University of Bedfordshire also has a campus in the town, offering opportunities for undergraduate or postgraduate study.
